Some say wishes are futile. They say that a wish is a waste of time, something that is beyond our grasps, a dish feasted upon by the weak and the poor. A wish is nothing more than a farfetched idea that is manipulated inside our dreams and lived out in our imagination. It’s easy to believe this when life catches up and swamps us with an unbearable workload of troubles, stress and sleepless nights. Sometimes, when the worst storms hits, a wish is all a person has left. It’s that tiny glimmer of hope that forces them to hold on and persevere, no matter how unfavorable the odds may seem.
It all started out almost five years ago when nine girls were assembled to accomplish the impossible. It all started out with nothing more than a whisper of a wish, a miniscule desire to chase after their dream. For the sake of this dream, nine girls sacrificed their childhood. For the sake of this dream, they drowned themselves in sweat and tears despite knowing that they might not even make it. All this for a dream that nine girls wished to realize, and through this seed of determination they were ready to surmount any obstacles in their way. They practiced for hours on end, mastering their steps for “Into the New World”, synchronizing everything but their very heartbeats. It was the power of a wish that bonded them together.
On the day they were given a chance to perform, their lives and careers were strung through a thin thread of hope. The tiniest slip-up from even one member could prove costly for the entire group. At that moment, there was no area shaded grey. It was hit or miss, pass or fail, and the simplicity of it all was what they feared the most. Yet they all stood together. Some held hands while others fidgeted nervously. The crowd couldn’t have possibly known, but their heartbeats were erratic, all signs of nervousness masked beneath a smile. At this moment, nine girls knew this was the turning point of their lives, but to make up for everything they had given up, determination flared in their eyes. This is what they wanted. It was the power of a wish that pulled them through.
2012 marks Girls’ Generation’s fifth anniversary, and based on math and probability, this is supposed to be the last year for an idol group. Under normal circumstances, idol groups only last for four or five years, right? That’s what people have told me. However, they have also told me that Girls’ Generation has the power to achieve the impossible and that they can reach heights that no one thought possible. Each and every girl has an unrivaled passion to sing and dance, and to perform on stage while witnessing a sea of screaming fans. Although it may seem like a common reoccurrence now, Girls’ Generation never takes anything for granted. This is why they are constantly pushing themselves and improving on even the most insignificant of details. They are nine girls who share the same wish, and over the course of nearly five years, it is their constant desire to realize this wish over and over again that draws them closer together. This is the reason why we, as fans, will always be supporting them in any given situation. Despite their underniable worldwide popularity, Girls’ Generation doesn’t take their wish for granted. They also don’t take us, their SONEs, for granted. To them, all that they have right now is a wish that could disappear at any given moment. It was the power of a wish that inspired perseverance.
Fans are undoubtedly any idol’s supporting pillars. Upon winning the 20th High1 Seoul Music Awards in 2010, Tiffany said that Girls’ Generation would be nothing without the fans. Without the fans, Girls’ Generation would have never existed, and these nine girls thoroughly understand this concept. After every win on a music station, Girls’ Generation thanked their fans. After every award that is passed into their hands, these nine girls are waving at the crowd and showing their genuine gratitude through playful interactions and infectious smiles. Seeing them yell out “I love you” and manufacturing hearts over their heads make us realize that this fandom is precious, and our love for each other is reciprocated. In return, these nine girls cannot help but shed tears of overwhelming happiness as they perform with every ounce of energy they have. They have no better way of saying “thank you”. Believe me, if it were humanly possible, Girls’ Generation would meet every single SONE in the world, but realistically, that simply isn’t an option. Instead, these girls use aching muscles and sleepless hours to prove to us over and over again that they’re happy to have us, and that they are grateful for all that SONEs have done over the course of their entire journey. Yes, they are tired, but they are also undeniably happy. It was through the power of a wish that gave them reason.
We are all part of the power of this wish, a wish shared by nine girls. Whether it’s listening to their songs, buying a CD or even just sharing one of their music videos on YouTube, we are the backbone of Girls’ Generation. The color pink has illuminated countless stadiums, and our screams became explosions in the air. Through unwavering love and dedication, each and every single person who has supported Girls’ Generation in one way or another has become a symbol of their wish. We have become the SONEs of Girls’ Generation. This is why the fandom thrives. It is through the power of a wish that pop culture could witness one of the most amazing groups to have ever toured the world.
No dream is ever too grand, as long as we have the power to wish for it and shape it into reality.

Everyone knows, something that started will come to an end, one day. But no one knows the specific date for every ending. The same case goes on with our favorite group idols, Girls’ Generation. They started as normal teenagers, by just introduced with ‘dreams’ that are impossible to be achieved. But by efforts, they try to reach the top, having the dreams that they were dreaming, setting themselves from nothing to something ultimate. And maybe, the time travels too fast, five years for the girls and it feels like it was just tomorrow we knew them. Yet, they are still loving and caring like the first time they were introduced as Girls’ Generation. Perhaps, people will call me insane, but I think this is my vow, as long as my heart is still beating, so on with my love and supports to Girls’ Generation. It will only stop when, I’m officially lost my mind (crazy/mad/insane), which I could react like other normal humans and only when my heart stops beating.
Miracles end when we stop believing, love ends when we stop caring, idols end when we stop supporting, friendship ends when we stop sharing and for many years forward, I’ll be a Sone, until the day I meet my death.
you know what?
i have been fans of many artists before and no one couldn’t make me fall so deep like Girls’ Generation. i swear. i reaaally love them, nine of them. I support them through many ways, saving money to buy their original CDs / merchandises. sharing music and videos with another SONEs in my country. I don’t fight haters, i don’t argue with haters, but if someone who does not know really well about our Girls’ Generation, I WILL HAPPILY explain to them with my limited knowledege about the nine girls :)
yes, the nine girls haven’t visited our country yet (Indonesia), but we keep loving them, making wishes for soo many years that someday they will visit us, waving their hands to us, seeing us making something that will surprises them as the other SONEs in another country did, we love them the way they are :)
SoShi is so special for us SONEs and SONEs are soo special for SoShi, it is a mutual simbiosis.
even though i consider myself as new SONE, but now i am sure, “you make my life complete” :’)
I don’t know about the rest of Sone, but I don’t feel like retiring this fandom any time soon, so year five will be momentous but because it is a milestone in a still longer journey, not the end of an era. And this article is great in explaining the significance of nine amazing woman, but also of Sone. It isnt just the blood, sweat, and tears of nine angels that have led to this tremendous success, but the sincere and heartfelt dedication of millions of fans. When you think of all the working parts in this fandom…the girls, the staff, the people they deal with for work, the fans…there are millions of people that have to make a decision, they choose to dedicate part of their precious time to a greater meaning, a symbol of hope and love in this world. They want to see those characteristics flourish in a world where it is not easy for them too. The choice of millions, the hard work of millions have allowed this symbol of hope and love to shine for five amazing years..but this is only the beginning…
Because of them, I found the idol whom I should align to. They got the values that I want to see in them. Even though I’m male and cannot become like them in some aspects, they’re my role models in some other ways in life.
I wish that not only the rich or the people with credit cards could go to their concert, because not all SONEs can afford to buy all the merchandises from them or to attend concerts. The poorer ones can support them in any other ways, such as spreading the word, voting them up on various awards, and of course, become a part of Soshified…
^–And I wish the girls know and understand this.
:’) i haven’t even been a fan for long and so i don’t know as much as a lot of people here but it was their first few performances like on GGTS that made me realise how passionate they were and how they kept going in such a big group till this day. so here’s to another 5 years and another 5 years after that too of making music and us supporting them :)
OMO I shed my tears as I was reading this article. Well written indeed. This reminds me the time I tirelessly cheered them during Bangkok concert last months. It also makes me realize that Thai fans are so passionate about every thing related to SNSD. Most of us could do fanchant and even sing their songs flawlessly. Honestly, K pop has become a poppular trend for several years and each band has their strong fans supporting them but it couldn’t match SNSD’s Sone at all.
This year marked 5th anniversary to the bands and also 5th anniversary of me being a part of Sone family. I dare to say that Sones is the most amazing fandom in K-pop history and it will always be.
Well-written *sobs lightly* Girls’ Generation is my inspiration to achieve my goals. Like the article said, without SONES, there wouldn’t be Girls’ Generation. Without them, I wouldn’t be achieving my dreams now. :]
Your Right :)
They went into hardships and all terrible things and that’s why they are what they are now
That’s what I like about them. They care for people around them, and never was arrogant.
They never looked down on us, they didn’t even care of all those haters bashing them.
Even though they are not respected they respect and even if no one cares they do.
They do not boast about it and instead they inspire us to be like them.
They started with nothing But a wish that they hope to accomplish, went through all trials and now is standing gracefully.
Trials are to test our patience, our faith and our perseverance. They did it.
It was hard but they went through it. And remember. After the rain of hardships is a rainbow full of happiness and joy. After the race of trials, there’s a finish line. And that finish line symbolizes VICTORY.
Thank you admin for making this <3
WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU GIRLS FOREVER ^-^
Sone’s and soshi completed each other..there will be no Sone without SNSD and no Sone without SNSD..
as long as Sone’s support and cherish the nine angels…they will absolutely last more than we thought..
i’d never been in any fandom before coz i thought it wasted time but SNSD change my view of life..they gave me courage to change and challenge myself..and believe in dream will come true one day…
It is one of the reason why I love being a SONE and I’m really thankful because I found SNSD in my heart. <3 :-)
This is exactly why i love this fandom and soshi so much :D
Well said. :)
i just loved how the first paragraph was written, awesome job! haha! but of course the whole article is very touching~ i never thought that they will stop after 5 years, i know they can make it to 20 or more years and i know i’ll still be a sone then, =]
Wow… enough said. Short but sweet! :D
Manly tears.
As long as Girls’ Generation lives, I will live on as a SONE. I have made my vow, my declaration: “I LOVE YOU, GIRLS’ GENERATION… AND I ALWAYS WILL… ‘TILL THE DAY I DIE…”
This group, this fandom, has given me new life and new perspectives about loving and being there for someone you really end up caring about. This editorial pretty much sums that up –> what everything I feel and think about Girls’ Generation and this bond they have with SONEs –> it’s simply something that’s there, but you will never understand unless you yourself become a part of it.
This is such a touching and wonderful post. Got me teary-eyed there for a while. I do hope this bond that SONEs have with Girls’ Generation will last for a very very long time, if not forever.
Thanks SSF ! I have a dream of see-ing all Nine Members one day . Thanks for this awesome post ! SSF <3
Ah!~ It’s so moving!!!! I really want to meet the Girls one day!!!! Thanks SSF for the awesome post you guys just know the right words to use,
Couldn’t have said it better.
They are not going to stop at five years, or ten years.
Girls’ Generation is a generation that knows no end and no boundaries.
Soshi family forever.
This is one of the great articles i read on SNSD…
this is just so beautiful and true…
yes, it the wish that make who we are right now and then…
it’s the power of wish…
how irony, sone also means wish in korean…
indeed, it is the power of SONE that make SNSD work harder…
yes, i work for them too, at least by buying their album can help them, i’ll buy everything…
i love SNSD…
I’m in tears right now.
This article made me realize (once again) how much I really love the Girls’.
Great article. =)
And I believe the thoughts expressed really struck a chord with every SONE in this world.
They showed us that wishes are not impossible and we all can achieve our wishes through hard work and dedication. Despite the probability of failing and never achieving that wish, I guess we can all be proud to say that we have put in our best efforts to achieving it.
Here is wishing that Girls’ Generation will continue to live that dream of theirs. We of course will be along the way to support them. =)
….*smiff* you sure know how to write some article… yeah the girls will give their all and our job is to cheer for them close or far away.
Oh wow this article is so touching.
And i do believe that Girls’ Generation is just getting started, they still have plenty more years ahead of them. It will also only be possible with the love of all SONEs around the world.
5 years used to be the norm for idol groups, but i don’t think it applies to all idol groups anymore, especially with their fandoms who are all dedicated to supporting their idols.
I guess this is the beauty of K pop that has got me hooked.
Thanks for sharing this article :)
Whoa. This editorial opens my mind and deepened my love to Girls’ Generation. When it comes to them, we sure it’s love. They make me believe in my own dream & strive for it. They really taught me to push myself to the boundary and give my best. They’re my real-time role model, 소녀시대.
