Hello and welcome to this month’s edition of “The Best of the Best”, a monthly countdown of the very best of anything to do with Girls’ Generation. As decided by your votes, this month’s “The Best of the Best” will focus on my five favorite Girls’ Generation’s dance performances in nearly five years as a group. With each performance listed, I included both my reasons for selecting it as a favorite performance and a video of the dance to help you decide whether or not you agree. Don’t forget to let me know in the comments what would have been in your own top five! Also, as with every month, I’ve created a poll for you to decide what you would like to see on next month’s “The Best of the Best”. This column is all about what you want to see, so be sure to vote! Lastly, can you guess which member of Girls’ Generation will be appearing the most in this month’s edition? Read through my list and see if you were right!
5. Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Seohyun – “Sorry Sorry” and “Smooth Criminal”
In 2009, Girls’ Generation took on Super Junior in the popular “Star Dance Battle” program on MBC, in which members from the two groups traded their title songs for a fun dance competition. Super Junior’s Leeteuk, Sungmin, Shindong, and Eunhyuk danced to Girls’ Generation’s “Genie” and a medley of other songs, while Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Seohyun performed Super Junior’s “Sorry, Sorry” and Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”. Dressed in black suits, the five members delivered a flawless version of Super Junior’s infamous “hand-rubbing” dance, complete with the choregraphy’s kicks and complex hand movements. After donning black hats, they moved onto Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” and even included the moon walk before finishing with King of Pop’s signature pose. These two dance covers together combined for an amazing show that begins my list of the very best dance performances by Girls’ Generation.
4. Girls’ Generation – “Jam”, “I Kissed a Girl”, and “Circus”
Another performance on “Star Dance Battle”, this time by all nine members, wins fourth place on my countdown and featured Girls’ Generation dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Jam”, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl”, and Britney Spears’s “Circus”. The performance began with “Jam” by Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Yoona, who eventually left the stage as the other six members of Girls’ Generation appeared for “I Kissed a Girl”. Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun then danced to the introduction of “Circus”, and soon were joined by all the members of the group. My favorite part of this performance then came as Hyoyeon, true to her title of the “Dancing Queen”, flew to the center of the stage in the middle of the song just as the lyrics went “I’m like the ringleader. I call the shots.” This enjoyable routine finished with all nine members on stage and, more than three years later, is still one of Girls’ Generation’s most memorable dance performances ever.
3. Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Yoona – SMTOWN Dance Break
The dance break featured in the second SMTOWN World Tour saw members from the many groups under SM Entertainment combine for one special stage. Girls’ Generation was represented by Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Yoona, who teamed up with f(x)’s Luna for a powerful performance that wowed fans in Seoul, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris, and New York. The video shown below was recorded in 2010, during SMTOWN in Los Angeles. Girls’ Generation’s part in the routine began with Hyoyeon, who first showed off her popping with Luna. The two were joined by Eunhyuk from Super Junior and Taemin from SHINee, the lead dancers of their respective groups, and Yuri, Sooyoung, and Yoona later appeared for a sexy hip-hop dance with Hyoyeon and Luna set to Pitbull’s “Go Girl”. Lastly, Eunhyuk, Taemin, Super Junior’s Donghae and Shindong, SHINee’s Minho, and f(x)’s Victoria came on stage for a grand finale with Michael Jackson’s “Jam”. This exciting performance thrilled hundreds of thousands of fans all over the world and also won the third spot on my countdown.
2. Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun – “Rhythm Nation”
As a singing group, Girls’ Generation’s dance skills are often overlooked and its dancers seldom get the chance to demonstrate their talents. One of the rare opportunities to do so came during 2009’s KBS Gayo Daejun, when Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun danced to Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation”, a fast paced tracked matched by the quick, crispy movements of the choreography. Though only a little more than a minute long, the performance was filled with powerful, complex movements not normally seen in Girls’ Generation’s choreographies and was capped off by a brief but difficult solo from Hyoyeon. However, the four youngest members have no trouble keeping up with Hyoyeon for the rest of the performance and are in-sync throughout. This fun and exciting dance took second place on my list.
1. Hyoyeon – “Genie Remix” and “So Sick”
Though all of Hyoyeon’s many dance performances have been breathtaking and well-choreographed, none have showed off her penchant for dance like her routine for Ne-Yo’s “So Sick”, which unfortunately was performed only once during the Shanghai stop of Girls’ Generation’s 1st Asia Tour and was never broadcasted or released on DVD. Luckily, several fancams were taken during the concert, allowing fans all over the world to see what was one of Hyoyeon’s most amazing performances ever, filled with powerful moves perfectly in sync with her dance partner. Unlike her dances in “Dancing with the Stars II”, this performance allowed Hyoyeon to demonstrate styles of dancing in which she is comfortable and well-trained in, from the robot-like movements set to a remix of “Genie” to the smooth and flowing movements set to “So Sick”. As she breezed through the choreography and made it look easy, Hyoyeon proved to everyone why she has earned the title of “Dancing Queen” and won the top spot on my list of Girls’ Generation’s best dance performances.

Thanks for this list. I can honestly say that I only know 2 of the 5 videos you showed so to be able to see 3 new videos of the girls dancing is a treat for me. Yey! :D Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next piece! :)
Although I love your picks. I would have thought the KJ Chocolate dance would have been here for sure.
hyoyeon will forever be our dancing queen, so if you didn’t
give the top spot to her, i would find you and strangle you!
HAHA! i remember watching yuri dance beforehand and thinking
she was really good, so why is hyoyeon called “the” dancer?
and then she came out and gave that #1 performance and i
understood all i needed to know. but i also want to mention
the dance breaks for smtown. my first concert was smtown
paris and i can safely say that was my favorite part of the
concert. i loved the power, i loved the passion, i loved the
sexy our girls permeated into the room!!!
My favorites are:
SNSD – I kissed a Girl and Circus
Yoona – My Name by BoA
Yuri – 1, 2 step
Sooyoung – Sway (christmas fairy tale) – I think she should be the next one doing Dancing with the Stars. I personally think she has potential to dance better than Hyoyeon with ballroom dancing
Hyoyeon – it’s expected she’s good at every dance performance, but I love it when she dances hip hop, popping and locking. No other girls can do it with power, precision and still make it look feminine like she does
I agree with the list but most of it is a michael jackson theme (don’t get me wrong.i totally love it) but i gotta say one of my favs is the dance of hyoyeon, yuri and sooyoung on idol big show. Lol they look so badass on the first song “the boogie that be” and sexying up with “break away”.Even though hyoyeon’s jacket fell off her waist she sure prove that nothing can mess up her dance. Lol how i wish they would be the next sub unit with a badass hiphop concept ^^
I love when they’re perform circus and i kissed a girl
the dance very energyc!
LSS of the number 5 entry so it brought me to another channel >http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_43TO_OPj-8 (please do check out)LOL SNSD kick ass when they’re dancing a man music HYOYEON Yeahgg!..
no doubt Kpop is alive because of SNSD
DAEBAK !
Our dancing queen Hyoyeon definitely rocked this one! It’s true that it has been a pretty long time since they performed a dance performance. Would like to see more, they should be improving a lot by now :)
And, I was surprised to see the dance performance in Kim Jungeun’s Chocolate where the girls danced Womanizer, Hollaback Girl etc.. That performance involved all 9 and they performed wonderfully well.
I think it deserves a shout-out!

I am.really glad that Hupyeon was in all of these. She really is an amazing dancer and she totally needs more epic stage time to show off.
As for the rank, there was one dance that i really loved that wasn’t on here:sooyoonyulhyo If you seek Amy. I think that sexy high paced dance was a really good one and it was awesome.that of inculded chairs
Hyoyeon definitely no 1… She truly shine brightly when dancing… I keep smiling when seeing her dance in dwts..and congrats on the 2nd win..
I totally miss hyo popping and locking…
although nowadays we could saw her talent on DWTS2, the dance routine is different than her usual style…
yeahhh…as a fan, always say not enough of her…
still, im glad she is in DWTS2…
BUT, i will wait for her cool and rock popping and locking…she has such a good talent, should not be waste….wish it will come true!
im sick of ” SMTOWN DANCE BATTLE ” SME should change the dance moves
amazing performances!! i would’ve put their smooth criminal performance with suju first because it’s just so cool..but i guess there are better dances xD
well for me, Yuri’s “1,2 step” or “get it right” could be regarded as one of the top 5.
on the other hand after being a SOne for 3 years, i noticed that their dance moves in dance medleys tend to be “recycled”. I see some moves used in other dance performances. i know that SM artists’ scheds are packed but they should really do new moves. I kept seeing some moves being danced over and over again. Other than that, SNSD really did a great job :)
yeah i agree with you
but since I really like Yoona .. I’m a bit confused to choose Yoona or Hyoyeon
hehehe :D
I agree with the first rank,Hyo’s genie rewix+so sick was so great..
I love when all of them perform a dance like in star dance battle and in sbs chocolate back in 2009..
And i would like to add ‘breakaway’ by SooRiHyo and ‘manequin’ by HyoYoonYulSoo XD
Well played lol, i love how Hyo dominate this entire thing, as well deserved<3
Go Kim Hyoyeon<3
Hyoyeon is ridiculous! Girls’ Generation 에이스 for sure! Snsd are some of the the most underrated dancers in kpop.
HYOEYON is really jjang!!!
I love all the dances! but no one in the group can surpass her passion in dancing.
though yuri is the most rival of Hyoyeon I guess, she’s just a rival but hyo’s moves
are all great and powerful in all aspects! she didn’t reigned as the Dnacing Queen for nothing. duh~
the performances above were great.. my Fav would be “Jam, I kissed a girl and circus ”
and I’d like to add “If you seek amy” and “what it is” performances too.. :)
if it’s dancing, of course it’s hyoyeon! who else? she’s the dancing queen anyway~
Dance has taken such a backseat in SNSD’s priorities. SM needs to get its act together in that regard. Just look at this list, the most recent one is from 2010. Nothing noteworthy from 2011 or 2012.
Agreed.
yeahh…agreed too…
waiting for new dance performance from them <3
this dance style are really good
but , untill now i just still confused who the best dancer in SNSD ?
Hyoyeon ? Yuri ? Yoona ? ckckckck
OMG!!! BY FAR it is definitely Hyoyeon!!! She is like the BEST DANCER in all of K-Pop!!! That’s why she is referred to as the ultimate DANCING QUEEN!!! She is honestly AMAZING!!! I bet no one could tell she was so talented at dancing and popping and locking etc by looking at Girls’ Generation. Unfortunately she isn’t able to show off her talent as much in GG, but if you are a huge fan of hers, you will know the one and only true skill and talent of Hyoyeon!!! It is unbeatable!! :D
LOL, sorry for my long rant. Just know that she is definitely the best!! Not only in her group, but probably in all of K-Pop!! :D
