When you think of Seohyun, what comes to mind?

Though she really is only two months older than me, the first thing that pops in my head is “maknae”. Maybe I’m just an old K-Pop fan now, but jokes aside, it doesn’t stop there. How about “role model”, “growth”, “diligence”, “humble”, or “kind”? Those are big shoes to fill, but if one person should have those qualities, Seohyun has surely and continuously served as an example.

In the age of social media and being a member of Girls’ Generation, Seohyun has given us the privilege of seeing her through the years, both on and off camera. We know that she’s an avid reader, someone who woke up early enough to be the wake up call for her members, and a person who really believes in cultural formalities and manners. Where I’m from, that describes quite the student whose habits I personally envy as I jokingly procrastinate on my own schoolwork. And what do you know? Seohyun already has a college degree amidst her own solo and group responsibilities. She’s shown development as a singer by providing her own vocal color with Girls’ Generation and earning recognition through musicals such as “Mamma Mia!”. Seohyun has also taken steps as an actress, most recently being cast in “Moon Lovers” and “So I Married an Anti-fan”. It’s a long list of accomplishments, so it’s only natural that Tiffany has referred to her as the “pride” of Girls’ Generation.

Clearly, Seohyun has quite the work ethic, with a resumé to back it up. She is so much more than that though. Older clips may depict her as someone who prefers sweet potatoes over hamburgers and has a firm belief in seat belts. But through the blessing fans have come to know as variety shows, Seohyun has shown her playful and humorous side as well, which often manifests itself through her adoration of her members.

Even more special to me is seeing how Seohyun has really been able to use Instagram (Twitter and Weibo also) to communicate with fans. Lots of celebrities do of course, but Seohyun has surprised me with the amount of uploads, especially selcas, simply to say hello or thanks to the fans. I personally saw Seohyun as someone who would be more reserved and quiet online despite her profession, so it’s quite a pleasant surprise to see her eagerly engage with SONEs. To me, that shows growth and in a weird (a good weird, though) kind of way, maturation. To disprove a misconception and show your true and wonderful personality — that’s when you really learn about a person’s character.

Maybe that’s what I admire most about Seohyun, and dare I say, feel inspired by her. She’s someone who is unafraid of obstacles and naysayers, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t grown as an individual or continued to improve herself. And what matters most to her is the love for those who have and continue to support her along the way to her goals. That’s someone I can get behind and strive to be like.

So here’s to you, Seohyun. Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do for SONEs. And of course, I want to wish you a very happy birthday on this June 28th. Have a wonderful time with your friends, family, and of course your Soshi unnies.
