Dear Jessica,

2014 hasn’t been easy; we know you’d be the first to agree. And in reality, 2015 is pretty tough as well, right? Starting with a new dream, a new set of rules, and a new industry no less. If the world wasn’t watching before, it certainly is now. So what can you do? Well: take a deep breath, step forward into a new lime light, and give it your all, just like you’ve been doing ever since that day long ago, that momentous, wonderful August day you stood on stage and showed South Korea, showed the world, just exactly what you’re made of.

Yup, that’s precisely what you did, and that’s precisely what we know you will continue to do, no matter the odds. Just look at you and how far you’ve come in just months. Going overseas, expanding BLANC & ECLARE, meeting people anyone would give up an arm and possibly a leg for just to be in the same room with, much less to be standing together in the same photo (Reggie Martin, anyone?). We all have opinions on the direction you are now headed, the path you now walk, but is that really any different from before? It isn’t anything you can’t handle, and you know it. Every one of us knows it. And that is all that should matter.

Jessica, the world envies you, if you didn’t already know that. You, the trainee who didn’t even mean to audition. The member who was revealed through dance—but that was never the only thing she could ever do, as we have discovered (and now, we can only miss and reminisce on, dearly). Back then, you were a camera-shy young girl, too scared to even face the eyes you couldn’t see without tears threatening to fall. But look at you now, and how incredibly far you have come from those nerve-wracking hours long ago.

Of course, I’d be lying if I said that nothing has changed in the slightest. But some change can be okay—we can adapt, after all. And we can have faith in the Jessica Jung that has stayed the same: the caring sister, the loving friend, the adorably shy goofball we may be able to see one day, again, even if it has to be under a different context. So until then, we’ll still be here: grinning, admiring, supporting—like we have been since we first became SONEs.

Happy birthday, Jessica. You haven’t stopped reaching for the stars, and we know you’ll stretch still further, even after you have those brilliant twinkling lights in your grasp.
