Among news of Girls’ Generation’s upcoming Japanese album, a British newspaper, “The Guardian”, has published an article on Girls’ Generation and K-Pop. The article talks about Girls’ Generation releasing an all-English album in the future, as well as the possibility of a successful entry into the Western music market.
Excerpts from the article are shown below and the full article can be viewed here.
“Girls’ Generation, a nine-member Korean girl group who had racked up millions of sales throughout east Asia long before Psy made ‘air’ horseriding socially acceptable, are poised to release their first album recorded entirely in English.”
“Tentatively due for release next year by Lady Gaga’s label, Interscope, the album will mark the group’s first serious effort to court English-speaking music fans.”
“Industry experts say the group’s brand of electropop and brilliantly produced videos will ease them into unfamiliar markets outside Asia. ‘Girls’ Generation totally fit the bill’, said Mio Scobie, overseas editor of US Weekly Magazine. ‘They produce feelgood beats, instantly memorable choruses and, as I’m sure people have already noticed, they’re stunning.'”

nice
Whether their album is in English, Japanese or Korean, SONEs like me will support So Nyu Shi Dae with all our might. But this is a great development. SONE love will spread even more to the world. Go SoShi!!!
Wow! I’ve been waiting this for so long and i’m excited about it. I’m mo so happy for them. SNSD fighting!
.
.Question, were there any announcements about the release of the english album?
It really doesn’t matter if they release a Korean, Japanese or English album
for as long as the group’s name is Girls’ Generation and the members are
Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun
I will definitely give my all out support.
SoShi Fighting!!
i feel nervous.
i’ll pray for them with all my might. hope for the best :) GG fighting!
whatever the language, i will always support them
I have a feeling it’s going to have a lot of the tracks from ‘Girls and Peace’ on it, from the preview of the album they sound really marketable for America
I’m stoked for this… the album I mean.
I can’t wait to hear what the girls have in store for us.
I wonder if I’ll be somewhere where I need to be quiet again when it’s released. XD
Me and my luck.
I’m happy they are being more featured in foreign news and this time it’s all about them, but those comments made me mad, saying “no more articles about kpop” or that PSY is enough kpop that they need.
It reminds me of back before they debuted people thought they wouldn’t succeed but SNSD proved them wrong. I do worry about whether they’ll succeed in the US, and so much other things, but it’s best to just believe in them and support them no matter what. I’m totally looking forward to this English ablum!
I read the article, I am seriously nervous for them. The comments there wasn’t so pleasant. But our 9 girls always prove themselves that they deserve something.
the album will mark the group’s first SERIOUS effort to court English-speaking music fans.” THANKYOU
The fact that SNSD is mentioned by UK Newspaper is a good thing. People outside South Korea, especially in England will know SNSD better and they will have more hope on SNSD’s full english album just as we do. Hearing SNSD will release full english album and try to break into US market, some ppl may feel worried. Ppl will have some questions, such as Is SNSD able to survive in US market ?, If they will not survive, wouldn’t it be better if they just stay conquer asia ? and etc. Well, I am worried too but I want them to grow bigger. In accordance with getting bigger success, there are also bigger challenge, bigger obstacles, bigger disappointment, bigger happiness and etc. So we have to be prepared too in order to support them in a new market which is more competitive.
The Guardian article brought some strong debate over the comment section. I’ve read all. Read some SONES heart there too. Thumbs up!
They’re not even started yet but whoah.. I can tell some firm disapproval of locals. That’s one thing to worry about. How will the western accept our girls. That’s scary but pretty exciting new adventure for them. Bigger goal. Bigger challenge. New world. Yay! Ready?
I wish for SNSD’s success in both Korean comeback and English album in the future. And also hoping that more people will realize that Su Nyu Shi Dae is not just a bunch of pretty faces.
this article shouldn’t be taken seriously.. the content is a compilation of other previous SNSD articles. The girls living together with only Tiffany having a single room, three born in the US and all of them speaking English comfortably, dominating Japanese market, having English album next year, etc. there’s no new content. But, at least they are promoting Girls Generation so we should be happy for that. Other than that there’s not much to be excited about. News that we should be excited about though is the girls having a confirmed Korean comeback early January next year. yeayy!
Dear Girls Generation,
Could you please consider the Canadian fans?
Please visit Toronto too ><
Sincerely,
Canadian fans
Lol, I totally know what you mean. I’m a brand new SONE and I realized recently that they haven’t really taken a step into Canada (even though there’s a SNSD Museum up here). Then again, how many fans are there up here?
@Momoy what, there’s a SNSD Museum in Canada? that’s freaking awesome. SM seriously needs to consider Canada in their World Tour line up.
being an english-speaking fan of the girls,
i will have a natural bias and excitement
toward the girls releasing an english album
as well as trying to make a concerted effort
to realize success within western music, but
i do realize there are other points of view.
if you do truly wish the ultimate success for
girls’ generation, then you will be excited as
i am. however, there will be two groups who
disagree with me…one is a group of selfish
individuals who want to keep the girls to
themselves. who don’t want the girls to continue
to expand their musical prowess. they want
to hold onto them, and not share them with
the world, at the impediment of the girls’
success…there will also be those too ignorant
and too close-minded to give the girls a chance
as they venture into a new market. they will
think them nothing more than an alien group
that they don’t understand and thus loath…
i am not being bitter…not anymore…i am just
stating the facts…you can be part of one of these
two groups, or be like the rest of us, which i
am proud to say is the majority, and be excited
for the girls break into the western market. we
may all have different reasons for this excitement,
but enthusiasm is enthusiasm. i know which group
i will be a part of when the girls release their
english album, which one will you be in?
which one will i be in…..well my answer is this —-> The beautiful PINK OCEAN :D
“there will also be those too ignorant
and too close-minded to give the girls a chance
as they venture into a new market.”
I totally agree. This is very evident by reading the troll posts at the end of the article. Too bad people have to be like that.
we’re SONEs and we’re in a forum called soshified. duh.
Either we share the same vision and love towards our girls, or somebody access the wrong forum.
LOL
The thing about people who don’t know kpop or SNSD in general is that they generally don’t know the story behind them.
For the longest time, I kept on trying to psycho-analyze why I’m such a fan of these girls when I have never been a fan of anyone (or any group) ever before in my life (graduated with psychology so forgive my over thinking lol). I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s because we know them. As in intimately. Thanks to the media, we watched them grow up and quite frankly became friends with them. As friends, we would want to support them, obviously. People who don’t know them like we do automatically clump them with the rest of the groups in the entertainment business, the good and the bad, regardless of the type of music. SNSD provides much more than just music and entertainment, at least to me. They give me the ultimate gift. Happiness. The type you get from spending time with close friends, not from watching a tv screen. Sounds kinda sad coming from a grown man, but hey… they make me smile because they’re down to earth and not stuck up and genuinely love what they do and their audience.
The clash of cultures when they release their English album is bound to be a sight to behold, but I wish them the best of luck and I’ll be doing my part to support them.
That is a fantastic article!
I think as far as music styles go, there is plenty of room on an album for a variety of styles and the more variety the better. I think an English album should have the kind of music they have been doing for years, some electro pop and a couple of ballads. I also like to hear them do one track that is completely out of the box and different from anything they have ever done.
Nice to see them being mentioned over here in the UK.
I’m all for this English debut, just as long as they get attention for the right reasons. I think Gangnam Style is great but it got popular for what you could consider the wrong reasons. It’s great that it went viral and it’s great PSY has had a lot of success from it, I just want the Girl’s to be showcased correctly :)
Hope to see our nine angels fighting again soon!
Yay for the Girls..but I’m not a fan of the electropop style they have been doing lately. I hope for more more years to come from Soshi. It has been feeling like they are slowly disbanding, hope that was just a temporary thing. They need to do more things together!
Man I agree 250% with you. Although I’m not against Global Generation but it would be great to have more “korean” kind of songs. Electropop is sometimes great but I don’t want soshi to sound like any other pop group nowadays.
I am sooo excited for the unnies to make their full English debut :) I believe that they will do a fantastic job in the U.S. and other western countries!!! At the kpop concert in America on November 10th almost all of them spoke a little English and I feel that they are all becoming comfortable with the language! I am also excited for their Korean comeback in January ;) 2013 is going to be a HUGE year for SNSD! Right now it’s Girls Generation!!!! :)
I woke up this morning to see if there was any new articles about the girls and happened to see this exact article. It was a total surprise to me and it made my day! I’m so happy right now!!! I can’t wait for the girls to come back here next year to bring their music to the USA, FINALLY! Every day all I think about is seeing the girls live in concert which is a dream of mine. When they were on the David Letterman Show and Kelly Live earlier this year, they made people aware that they are coming! The power of 9 is aiming for world domination now. I’m so proud to be a SONE!!! 2013 is going to be a great year for the girls. They got their Korean comeback and their English debut (by next summer hopefully.) This is an exciting day for me! GG won’t stop! ;)
“Industry experts say the group’s brand of electropop and brilliantly produced videos will ease them into unfamiliar markets outside Asia. “Girls’ Generation totally fit the bill,” said Mio Scobie, overseas editor of US Weekly Magazine. “They produce feelgood beats, instantly memorable choruses and, as I’m sure people have already noticed, they’re stunning.”

I agree with this paragraph and as long as Interscope stick to this route i believe the girls will do good. But hopefully they’ll also have good meaning to the lyrics and don’t make it sound weird. Most of all i hope the Western public will keep an open mind. good luck ladies and best wishes, i’ll be supporting all the way. oh and thank you to The Guardian for not forgetting the importance of this kpop group. Thank you SSF. Saranghaeyo! :D
so i just finish reading the article and then scroll down to the comments. well let’s just say that those comments aren’t going to turn me away from who i believe in and love and it’s these 9 girls and their music. SNSD fighting!
The full article says that all nine are comfortable with English. Let’s be honest here. Basing it off of last year’s MTOWN at Madison Square Garden, I would say only 4, maybe 5, are comfortable with English. Obviously Tiff and Jessi have no problems. Sooyoung and Seohyun also seem fairly skilled enough to be okay. Sunny seemed like a so-so then. But maybe it’s changed. They don’t really speak English enough for us to get a clear picture of their actual abilities.
Unfortunately, even Sooyoung and Seohyun aren’t good enough. If you’ve seen their jTBC interview after their US debut, none of them could reply to a question asked in English…
What’s more, after watching some of their interviews from last year, it seems that Jessica isn’t that fluent in English.
But I’m not here to criticise them. I believe their English will only improve with time and I hope that English will be “not a barrier but a pathway” to their successful full-scale US/World debut.
In my opinion, Tiffany and Jessica are the only two that are comfortable with English. Sooyoung attempts to and that might round it to 2 1/2 girls being fluent. Seohyun does do extensive practicing with… everything, let’s be honest here, but as far as to if she can just go with it when asked a question without practice, it’s unsure. So maybe it’s only 3ish.
Jessica can in fact speak English fluently, to the person that replied before me, but she’s just more quiet and tends to be more “stage fright” compared to Tiffany, whom is the loud and bubbly one and has no problem with talking.
@pabocheoreom like what @OutCasting_Grll said about Sica i agree. maybe that’s why people don’t see her talking a lot and just let Fany do the talking. i wish she would talk up though so that way she can help out Fany, because sometimes Fany seem to can’t explain herself properly and she look and sound “awkward”. also i’ve seen a lot of comments complaining that Fany talks too much and should let the others talk more.
i was really not expecting this news! an english album? but there were rumors about a korean comeback in january o.o probably korean first and then english~
if it’s a korean comeback in january, they will rock the charts again! :3
and if it’s an english album, i wish them all the luck in the world to be successful in western countries! i hope they won’t receive too much hate and will get enough rest! not like last time…i felt so terribly sorry for them when they were in new york promoting ‘the boys’…sm, please take care of our girls!
soshi fighting!
Our nine angels fighting!!!!!!!
