#6436414 [PV] Genie (Dance Version)

Posted by jcadigital on 17 February 2014 - 12:52 PM

Overall: 7.5/10

Song:7/10 (Korean version for comparison 8/10)

The song is catchy, especially the chorus. The chorus has a good hook and in comparison to the Korean version almost match beat to syllable where between the two version are almost indistinguishable except the language being used. In general I usually find the Korean versions and the Korean language have a better flow when it comes to the melody than the Japanese version. In addition, Korean is their native language so they would be more comfortable singing in Korean than Japanese. However I find the Japanese in this song to have a great flow.

Each member gets highlighted when they sing, and each of them sounded great. Glad that they kept some English especially when it came to Tiffany's "DJ, put it back on!" Taeyeon's solo sounded great. In comparison to the Korean version I felt she held back in this version and was a little bit more conservative when it comes to her full singing potential. Overall the whole song seemed more softer than the Korean version.

Translations are different from the Korean version and I am basing this off the Soshified sub versions. The Japanese version when translated to English seems syncopated, where there is a lot of abrupt but short stops. A little bit awkward and hence why I support my earlier statement of Korean version have a better flow. The Japanese lyrics give an overall feel of "wish coming to fruition" while the Korean lyrics give an overall feel of "wish granting/listening".

Dance: 9/10

This PV demonstrates the awesome synchronization, precision, and hard work of Girls' Generation. I actually showed a friend who is not a K-pop fan and I agree with his description, "hypnotic". Nothing is perfect, but this PV is the epitome of dance perfection. No member seems to be out of place. At least the one I notice is that ~1:56 Jessica is trying to squeeze in between Sooyoung and Yuri. The PV has almost the same dance formation as the Korean version. The exceptions are:

~0:23 where Seohyun and Yoona step forward and have their hands go across their eyes while in the Korean version they just sync with rest of the members

~3:00 where Taeyeon walks straight backwards into place where in the Korean version she would actually rotate with Yoona.

If I have to critique it would be that I like the close-ups and legs galore, but it is unfortunate that the way the camera is angled it blocks off some of the members in the frame. I think it would be better if they have a fixed camera angle and more from a distance to see the whole formation and transitions.

Overall the [PV] Genie Dance Version stands till this day to me one of the best dance formations of Girls' Generation.

Concept: 7/10

Like its Korean counterpart, it goes with a military concept using olive and green and white colors. While the Korean version was more of a "marine" look, I think this Japanese Dance Version was more of an "army" look. Also like its Korean counterpart the dress emphasizes the heels and legs, as I said before, legs galore. I like how in this version they had dog tags which accents the military look. However what I miss is that the member sort of lose their personal identity in the concept. The Korean version had each member have a unique style whether it would be hats and/or hairstyle while in this version the costume was more uniform. This helped add the synchronization effect of the dance which made it more alluring.

MV Set: 5/10

The whole dance version takes place inside a circus theme tent using peppermint colors of red and white with round light bulbs surrounding a circular stage. Nothing too outstanding in comparison to the Korean version where it had brighter white lights and a lighted background with lighting patterns. This PV dance version had "Girls' Generation" on a sign in the background but not really noticeable.

#4978907 [UFO] Taeyeon's UFO Messages

I love Taeyeon. She is a dork on screen, off screen, online, in paper. You can just sense it. We need a book of witty remarks of Girls' Generation.
