Remember when Girls’ Generation would introduce themselves with those overly cheesy descriptions in front their names? Kid Leader Taeyeon? Energy Pill Sunny? Hard to believe that was about eight years ago, huh? Needless to say, they don’t use them anymore, since everybody knows who they are nowadays, but back then, they needed a catchphrase to make them stand out from the rest. Of course, the easiest and smartest thing to do would be to highlight the trait that made them stand out the most, right?

Cheerful Princess Sooyoung

If you think about it, “cheerful princess” doesn’t seem like a phrase that would be be beneficial when it comes to standing out from the crowd. Cheerful? Well, most of the people in the business are, or at least have to pretend to be. Princess? Not really a descriptive word, is it? Compared to the catchphrases of the other members (I mean, how many other people call themselves a “black pearl”, or an “ice princess” for that matter), this one seems to be a tad lacking. So why exactly “cheerful princess”? Let’s take a closer look at what this catchphrase could mean.

Cheerful:

I think this one pretty much explains itself. With the rise of Soshi during the “Gee” and “Genie” period also came the rise of Sooyoung on variety shows. Who doesn’t remember her hilarious imitations and gags? Her antics never fail to brighten up the mood and provoke explosive laughter, something that every one of us could use a little bit of these days.

Princess:

It has been well-known that Sooyoung comes from a wealthy family pretty much since their debut through MTV’s documentary “Girls Go To School”, in which her family’s home had been shown. Whenever people talk about princesses, it is usually done so with a mocking tone. A princess? They’re entitled. Spoiled. Naive, almost to a fault. It is easy to see how a person who has always lived a comfy life could grow up to live an ignorant one, right? Yet they are also portrayed as warm characters, people who take care of their people, and I think Sooyoung personifies exactly that. Even though she must be used to receiving a lot, she always makes sure to give back to the people, showing how kind her heart is.

For example, Sooyoung was appointed a public relations delegate for UNICEF’s “Santa Campaign” in 2013, which asked for volunteers to become Santa, supporting children in need during that Christmas. She also frequently visits Park Seungil, a former basketball player who was struck with Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS. When the “ice bucket challenge” became a trend internationally this past summer, Sooyoung was one of the first Girls’ Generation members to meet that challenge head on in order to help the ALS Association find a cure. And last but certainly not least, Sooyoung has done an incredible amount of work for the Korea Retinitis Pigmentosa Society, a nonprofit organization that strives to combat the degenerative eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa; this cause hits extremely close to home for her, as her father suffers from the illness and is the head of KRPS. All in all, it is clear that Sooyoung will stop at nothing to help others in any way she can.

Besides the above mentioned traits, Sooyoung has so much more to offer. Yes, she is a very goofy and cheerful person; but she is also someone who can switch from goofball to red carpet goddess in a matter of seconds. Be it as actress Choi Sooyoung or just slaying the stage with her glorious mane that crowned her with the title of “hairporn goddess”, she knows exactly how to present herself according to the situation. Did I mention that she also worked as an MC and was well beloved for her witty remarks as well? One does wonder if her height correlates with the amount of talent she possesses.

So all in all we have this stunning, witty, smart, charming, and kind-hearted lady who is not only a fantastic entertainer but also has a passion for taking care of people and supporting them consistently. What more could you ask for? Cheers to our cheerful princess, Choi Sooyoung.
