Hello and welcome to the thirteenth edition of “The Best of the Best”, a monthly look into the top five of anything and everything to do with Girls’ Generation. Based on your votes last month, this unlucky edition of “The Best of the Best” will feature my favorite OSTs by the members of Girls’ Generation, who have sung many tracks for several dramas with more sure to come. In a few months, this list will likely be outdated! However, here are my five current favorite songs by Girls’ Generation that have been featured in a drama, along with my reasons why and a video of the song to help you decide whether or not you agree. As always, this column is all about what you want to see, and so I’ve also included a poll for you to determine what next month’s column will feature. Finally, don’t forget to let me know in the comments what your favorite Girls’ Generation OSTs are, and I’ll see you next month!

5.  “마음길 (Heart Road)” – Jessica

Released just last month for the OST of “The Great King’s Dream”, Jessica’s  “마음길 (Heart Road)” was too late to be included in my “Top 5 Solo Songs”, but just in time to open my list of Girls’ Generation’s best OSTs. Like “눈물이 넘쳐서 (Because Tears Are Overflowing)” for the “Romance Town” OST, “마음길” is one of the few songs to show Jessica’s control and stable voice as opposed to a cute sound, while also featuring a wide range of instruments to complement Jessica’s gorgeous voice as she sings of her beloved and a path for her heart. This beautiful song wins fifth place on my list of Girls’ Generation’s OSTs.

4. “사랑해요 (I Love You)” – Taeyeon

My favorite Girls’ Generation solo song, Taeyeon’s “사랑해요 (I Love You)” for the OST of “Athena” is one of my favorite Girls’ Generation OSTs as well. Though Taeyeon has sung many songs for various dramas, from “만약에 (If)” in 2008 for “Hong Gil Dong” to her most recent song, “가까이 (Closer)” for “To The Beautiful You”, “사랑해요” stands out as her very best. This stunning, touching, and heartbreaking ballad shows off Taeyeon’s talent and soothing voice like no other and demonstrates why she is known as one of the best idol vocalists in South Korea. An incredible OST song, Taeyeon’s “사랑해요” takes fourth on this month’s top five countdown. (Warning! Turn down your volume before clicking “play”!)

3. “Motion” – Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, and Seohyun

The first of two songs from the soundtrack of “Heading to the Ground” on my top five is “Motion”, a happy, fun, and light-hearted track. “Motion” is sung by five of the members of Girls’ Generation, who show their cute sides and voices while Jessica and Tiffany include English words throughout all of the lyrics. This catchy and energetic song makes me smile each time I hear it, and I often wish that it was a song that Girls’ Generation was able to promote on an album or on music shows, as it reminds me of “Gee” and “Kissing You”, upbeat and very cheerful. Cute and adorable, “Motion” takes the next spot on my favorite OSTs by Girls’ Generation.

2. “사랑인걸요 (This Must Be Love)” – Taeyeon and Sunny

In contrast to “Motion”, Taeyeon and Sunny’s “사랑인걸요 (This Must Be Love)”, also sung for the “Heading to the Ground” soundtrack, is a slow and soothing ballad and duet. In it, Taeyeon and Sunny take turns showing off their vocals one after the other, demonstrating their amazing voices for their only official duet. The two shortest members of Girls’ Generation prove that their voices more than make up for their lack of height as they deliver this touching song, which tells of a person who has realized they have fallen in love. Taeyeon and Sunny also performed this song on Taeyeon’s “Chinchin” radio show in a beautiful live performance. “사랑인걸요”, affectionately known as the “Dandyu Duet”, wins second place on my list of Girls’ Generation’s very best OSTs.

1. “영원히 너와 꿈꾸고 싶다 (Forever)” – Girls’ Generation

Included in both the soundtrack of “Pasta” and Girls’ Generation’s second full album, “Oh!”, “영원히 너와 꿈꾸고 싶다 (Forever)” ranks among Girls’ Generation’s best songs and ballads ever. This powerful and emotional song is one of the rare tracks that allowed all nine members to show off their wonderful voices throughout, and each member is given at least one line to sing. Finally, their voices combine to harmonize for a breath-taking climax, which has stunned hundreds of thousands of fans during Girls’ Generation’s solo concerts throughout Asia. The members of Girls’ Generation also once revealed on radio that at the time, “영원히 너와 꿈꾸고 싶다” was their third favorite out of all their songs and that the beautiful lyrics, which describe a person who has fulfilled wishes, were aimed at SONEs, who helped to fulfill the wishes of Girls’ Generation. As one of my favorite Girls’ Generation songs, “영원히 너와 꿈꾸고 싶다“ easily wins the top spot on my list of Girls’ Generation’s best OSTs.

Since this song is the greatest thing since sliced bread, another bonus video! (Does anyone mind if this becomes a trend?)
